Are you watching the banners? At least the banners are watching you!, published on Wednesday, 01 September 2010 11:05PMWhen was the last time you looked at a banner? Provided you don't already use a banner blocker, and I don't mean just noticed that there was a banner (some flashing moving thing on top of the page or on the side, or maybe even covering the content you were just about to start reading and making you race for the close button), but really looked at it? Maybe even clicked it? And if you did, do you look at banners all the time? Well, don't worry if you don't; at least banners know when you are not looking, and they're telling it to the advertisers. The internet anno 2010: all about the money?, published on Sunday, 20 June 2010 12:44AMSometimes when I look back at my internet career I get a feeling of dismay, and it's not only about my career itself but also about the internet as a whole. What started out as an exciting new technology with endless possibilities now only seems to revolve around advertisements and SEO in order to attract as many visitors as possible in order to maximize the income on said former advertisements. DHTML Lemmings primer, published on Saturday, 29 May 2010 11:39PMIt's been 7 years since I wrote DHTML Lemmings™. In internet-terms that's a lifetime; back in those days Firefox didn't exist yet (Mozilla Phoenix was on version 0.8 or something and IE6 was the dominant browser), we didn't have HTML5 or javascript libraries and web standards was just a grassroots movement. It was hard to make dynamic cross-browser things back then, yet I managed to create something that still works in browsers today. Read more »

Heads or Tails?, published on Sunday, 16 May 2010 11:49PMClientside Performance Guru Steve Souders recently created a test to see if browsers implicitly create a <head>-element for all HTML documents. I pointed out in the comments that there might be more in play than just the fact that some browsers don't follow the specifications (notably mobile browsers) to the letter with regards to DOM-tree building. The real reason Apple and Microsoft are embracing 'HTML5', published on Sunday, 02 May 2010 11:43PMJust the other day Microsoft has chimed in with Apple in its fight against Adobe's Flash calling it 'proprietary' and 'not-open' and pushing forward 'HTML5' as the technology of the future. Both posts seem to focus on video on the web and it is striking that they both mention H.264 as the codec of choice, a codec that is neither free nor open and has little to do with HTML5 itself.

CSRF protection with 'self-validating' tokens, published on Friday, 16 April 2010 11:10PMCross-site Request Forgery is a very common social exploit method to make people unknowingly do things on their own behalf on a targeted website. It's the number four on the 2010 CWE/SANS Top 25 Most Dangerous Programming Errors list. The main reason this problem exists in most websites is the fact that they don't check the origin of an incoming request that results in an action on that website. There are several ways a website can protect itself against these sort of attacks and I'm going to explain the way we, at Tweakers.net, have implemented our own protection method. Read more »

The MS browser ballot page analyzed, published on Sunday, 14 March 2010 11:49PMThere's been a lot of talk about the new Microsoft browser ballot screen lately. I for one would like to say that I think this solution is a very good thing. I really commend Microsoft for having come up with this solution. It seems that this solution however is not very well understood by some people who just think it is annoying and 'blame' the European Commission for 'butting in' on the free market. Read more »

Lees verder »

Die IE6, die!, published on Tuesday, 09 February 2010 1:03AMThe Dutch nowadays are a conservative kind of people; they don't like to stick out their necks when it comes to radical changes. They much rather prefer to keep everything as it was. But when a greater power tells them to jump, the Dutch will gladly ask "how high?" Read more »

Clientside performance no priority for Dutch websites, published on Monday, 04 January 2010 1:10AMAs a senior developer at Tweakers.net and being specialized in frontend development I always take clientside performance very seriously. Even if your backend code is optimized to the bone, a slow rendering frontend can still spoil the whole experience for your visitors, and a bad first impression will make your visitors go elsewhere. A couple of recent articles on some other Dutch ICT-centered newssites made me wonder if they are taking clientside performance just as seriously. Read more »

Lees verder »

IPv6 validation - more caveats, published on Sunday, 08 November 2009 11:12PMLast week I was taking a nice hot bath while reading the Regular Expression Cookbook by Jan Goyvaerts and Steven Levithan. Really, there is no better way of relaxing But then chapter 7.17 made me jump out of the tub, rush to my computer, and - while still wet - start typing the regular expression printed on page 387. The chapter was called 'Matching IPv6 Addresses'. Read more »
